REUSE FOUNDATION
Reuse Foundation is a UK-based charity dedicated to solutions that prevent plastic waste from consumer goods
We focus on stopping plastic waste being created, not on cleanups or recycling

Reuse is the best way to stop plastic waste from consumer goods
Reuse...

-
is simple and effective
-
has a long tradition of proven solutions
-
ensures resources are used wisely with minimal waste
-
can quickly work for almost all personal care and household care liquid products and many beverage and food items
-
has been overlooked as policy makers and industry focused on recycling and making packaging 'recyclable' even though these don't help lower plastic use or greatly impact plastic waste
...is the best realistic near-term solution to prevent plastic waste
Sir Stephen Timms MP
"I fully support the Reuse Foundation and its different, pragmatic approach. Reusing packaging is the best way we can all work to beat the plastic crisis"
Alan Jope, CEO Unilever
"Unilever backs Reuse Foundation. We stand ready to move to reuse solutions as soon as our key competitors agree"
Queen Elizabeth
"One feels strongly enough to resurrect to complain about this ghastly stuff. I blame Megan"
Three Key Stakeholders
Reuse can be complicated to implement and requires participation of three stakeholders with conflicting needs and goals

Businesses
Companies use plastic and increasingly seek better solutions. But they’re not breaking the law and they have a responsibility to their shareholders, so it's difficult for them to invest too heavily in solutions that consumers may not want
Companies need:
-
guaranteed level playing field
-
to know when environmental laws will change and what to
-
to know which solutions would work for their brands, factoring in brand, logistic and operational specifics
-
to know demand will be there before making large investment
-
to better understand changing consumer attitudes
-
to understand the downsides of doing nothing

Consumers
Consumers are angry about plastic but often don't know the best thing to do. Many believe recycling solves the problem (Ha!) and are unaware of effective solutions. Consumers must be more willing to adopt solutions that work and adapt behaviours
Consumers need:
-
a way to express their frustration and be heard
-
better access to accurate information
-
to be educated and encouraged to try new ways of getting the brands they love
-
to know where to find solutions
-
to know something is being done
-
to join/influence/campaign/take action

Law and Policy Makers
Politicians and lawmakers need to enact law to prevent plastic waste and encourage alternatives. But this is not an easy task. It requires intense consultation with numerous industry bodies and careful consideration to balance competing interests
Lawmakers need:
-
to know what level of readiness exists to change laws
-
to understand the economic implications of different paths
-
to know how to structure regulations to balance competing goals (affordability vs. plastic use vs. carbon footprint…)
-
up to date information on what’s happening (consumer attitudes, brand actions, technological changes, trends…)
Start The Change
We’re different…
Established by professionals with CPG experience as marketers, researchers and refill specialists, Reuse Foundation seeks practical solutions based on applied research and consumer insights that work for consumers and business
-
We won't fund plastic recycling (it’s part of the problem)
-
We won't fund clean-ups (we want to stop the waste in the first place)
-
We work with consumer goods companies that use plastic since they can solve the problem fastest

What's wrong with plastic recycling?

PLASTIC RECYCLING WON'T WORK!

-
Plastic recycling will never be a solution to the plastics crisis
-
It’s been the focus for decades and is failing
-
Little plastic ever gets recycled and this won't change this century: OECD says just 9% of plastic waste was recycled in 2019, projected to reach 17% in 2060
-
Plastic can‘t be recycled perpetually; it eventually goes to landfill, incineration or the oceans
-
Recycled plastic typically requires blending with virgin plastic (99% from fossil fuels), so recycling plastic just guarantees ongoing demand for fossil fuels
-
It's shocking policy makers and industry focused on plastic recycling and making plastic packaging ‘recyclable’ when neither will impact plastic use or waste. Read more
